Mike Doyle and the presenters

Associate Mechanical Engineering Professor Howie Choset (left) participated in the 8th Annual Department of Defense Hill Day in Washington, D.C. this summer. The yearly event gives congressional legislators and staffers an opportunity to see defense-related research conducted at universities. Choset displayed his snake robot designed for search and rescue operations and to help assess waste contamination sites. Choset is pictured with Pennsylvania Representative Mike Doyle (center, D-18th District) and James Sharp, Doyle's legislative director.

Professor Granger Morgan, head of the Engineering and Public Policy Department, moderated a panel discussion among environmental journalists this summer. The journalists, members of the Executive Committee of the Society for Environmental Journalists (SEJ), discussed how environmental news is reported in newspapers and on radio and television. They also discussed what makes a good environmental story and how they pitch story ideas to their editors. The SEJ will hold its 2004 convention at Carnegie Mellon.
