Decolonizing the Ear
The Reverberations of Vernacular Musics in the Era of Electrical Recording

It is a study of the dramatic transformations in vernacular musics that take place around the world in the years between 1925 and 1931 in the wake of electrical recording, radio broadcasting and sound film, their place in the working-class musical cultures of the metropolises of modernism, and their connection to the larger history of decolonization.
Michael Denning is the William R Kenan Jr Professor of American Studies at Yale University, and the Director of the Initiative on Labor and Culture.
