Fulbright Hays Doctoral-Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA)
This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. Fundable projects deepen research knowledge and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula. Projects focusing on Western Europe are not supported.
ELIGIBILITY
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
- Be a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education OR admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies by the time the fellowship program starts.
- Possess advanced foreign language skills to conduct the dissertation research project.
- Be planning a U.S. teaching career upon doctoral degree completion.
Application Procedure
Students are required to work with OURSD to apply for DDRA fellowships through Carnegie Mellon. The timeline varies from year to year, so be sure to check the campus deadline and final deadline in the information box on the right-hand side of this page. - Curriculum Vitae
- A narrative – submitted via G5 e-Application (Check Federal Register notice for page limitations)
- A bibliography – submitted via G5 e-Application (Check Federal Register notice for page limitations)
- Host Country Supporting Materials
- Unofficial Transcripts—Graduate and Undergraduate--submitted electronically (recommended to help demonstrate the applicant’s language and area studies academic training)
- Electronic Graduate Student References – initiate the email to your referees
- Electronic Language Reference for each language of research– initiate the email to your referees
