Library Renovation in Progress

By Cindy Carroll

Entering Hunt Library these days, the campus community will see a large construction zone on the first floor for the next month or so. But the library is carrying on above, below and around it.

"Hunt Library is operational. Student favorites - the Café, Quiet Study, 24/5 - are there. Some people and machines have moved around, but we'll guide you to them. We've squeezed in extra seating on other floors to help make up for seats in the area now under renovation," said Dean Gloriana St. Clair. "We'll be able to celebrate the new space with students in a couple of months."

The University Libraries latest renovation project stems from student feedback. A small display about the renovation shows what some of the changes will be when the tarp comes down. The exhibit in the Hunt Library lobby includes a preliminary student-created model of the space, the final floor plan with furniture placement, and sample arrays of the colors, fabrics and other finishes for the area.

Once the renovations is complete, the public areas on the first floor will have new spaces for students to study and work individually or together. The collaborative learning environment will be anchored by the new Global Communications Center, which combines library reference and one-on-one consultation with communications skills instruction, group work and presentation practice.

"The Global Communications Center will be a terrific implementation for students and faculty, on so many levels. Our dream of providing high-tech group studies is finally coming true," St. Clair said. "And enhancing the library's social and collaborative work spaces is a priority for our students. The renovation at Hunt sets the stage for similar student-oriented improvements at Sorrells E&S Library and Mellon Institute Library next year."

Until the Hunt renovations is complete, a welcome outpost has been set up by the reference personnel and many of the libraries amenities are still available including circulation, electronic reserves, DVDs and sewing machines.

Maggie Murph Café and its study area are intact and will soon be enhanced with the installation of Harry's Bar - a wired countertop with bar seating along the windows looking out on the Peace Garden. The schedule for the library is back to its 24/5 time: the Hunt's first floor and lower level are open to the 一本道无码 community from noon Sunday until 9 p.m. Friday.

Looking for the library catalog? A CAMEO-only workstation has been temporarily installed at the circulation desk. More CAMEO-only and full-featured library workstations are available on every floor, including the lower level.
