Students learn what it would take to be an autonomous car technician

“You’re on the edge of the beginning of a new industry”, says Autonomous Vehicles Service Manager, Joe Serbin, “In about five years, this industry is going to need tens of thousands, if not a hundred thousand technicians just to keep up.”

ARGO AI, a self-driving vehicle company, hosted a group of young adults from The Garfield Jubilee to talk about the company, and what it means to be a technician in this industry.

“Giving the youth in our communities a chance to see the world-class technology that’s being developed right here in Pittsburgh, and seeing these kids light up is just incredible!”, says Vu Nguyen of the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy (CMRA).

is one of a series of site visits planned for the SMART-ER project, CMRA’s initiative (funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor through ) that is working to give students in underserved communities to getting exposed to the Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes (KSA) that technicians would need to work in Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing.

To learn more about SMART-ER you can go to our Research area. You can also learn about the parent project, SMART. You can also email us at cmra@nrec.ri.cmu.edu for more information about either of these projects.
