New Gradebook Features for Fall 2019

Canvas’ New Gradebook is available in all courses starting Fall 2019. This guide is intended to help orient you to some of the changes and new features provided by the New Gradebook.

Import and Export the Gradebook

The options to import/export your gradebook are now under the Actions menu. Expand the "Actions" menu to import or export a CSV file of your Gradebook.

Assignment Statistics

Assignment statistics (average/low/high score) are now available through the Analytics tool. To enable this tool in your course and view assignment statistics, follow the steps below. Please note: this tool is only visible to instructors and TAs. It is not visible to students even when enabled.

  1. Go to the Settings area of your course
  2. Click the Navigation tab
  3. Scroll down to the Analytics Beta box and click the three dots on the box
  4. Select Enable
  5. Save your changes on this page

Next, click the Analytics Beta link in the left menu of your course.

By default, you’ll be given analytics on the weekly activity in your course. To view assignment statistics:

  1. Click the arrow next to Weekly Online Activity, select the Course Grade option
    • course-grade-gradebook.png
  2. From here, you will be given a scatterplot of average grades for each graded item in your course. You can also filter this view to only view assignments, or quizzes, etc. To view the average grade for each item, click on the blue dot that corresponds with the item

Mute Grades

The option to “mute” grade columns (so that grades and comments for an assignment do not show to students) has been replaced by the Grade Posting Policy option. You can set the Grade Posting Policy on each column in your gradebook or set a default Grade Posting Policy that will apply to all grade columns in your course. The instructions for each option are outlined below.

If you would like to change the Grade Posting Policy on an individual column:

  1. In the Grades area, hover over the column header and click the three dots that appear
  2. Click Grade Posting Policy
    • grade-posting-policy.png
  3. Toggle this to Manually and click Save
    • post-grades-manual.png
  4. The grades in this column will be hidden to students until you go to the column and click the Post Grades option
    • unmute-post-grades.png

If you would like all columns in your course to be muted/hidden to students by default:

  1. In the Grades area, click on the gear icon in the upper right area

  2. Click the Grade Posting Policy tab
  3. Select Manually Post Grades and click the Update button

  4. By default all your grade columns will be muted/hidden from students until you go to the column and click the Post Grades option

A note about the Hide Grades option: After you have input grades for an assignment, you will notice that, for the corresponding grade column, you have the option to Hide Grades. This option does not appear until a grade has been entered for this assignment. Hide Grades is a way to hide grades after the fact. We strongly recommend that, instead of using the Hide Grades option, you set the Grade Posting Policy to Manual.

Hide Student Names

This is now done through Anonymous grading and Moderated Grading features already in Canvas. You can also still hide student names in SpeedGrader.

 'Treat Ungraded as 0' option

This feature is currently still available in the Individual View Gradebook but not in the Grid View Gradebook, which will be resolved in a future release. You can still view grades as zeroes in the New Gradebook by using the global Missing Policy option or use the Default Grade option for individual assignments (these options are not retroactive and will only apply to new submissions.)

Update Late Policies

The Gear icon allows you to create or update your course late policies.
gradebook gear search field
  • Auto apply grade for missing assignment - allows you to automatically apply a grade percentage for submissions labeled as Missing. (A submission is labeled Missing when the due date has passed and the assignment has not been submitted.)
  • Auto apply Grade for late assignments - allows you to automatically apply a penalty to submissions with a status of “Late”  (a submission is labeled Late when it is submitted past the due date).
  • Set the late submission deduction to percentage and the interval of deduction (per day/per hour).
  • Set the lowest possible grade percentage, which defines a threshold under which a student will not be scored, regardless of how late the submission is when submitted.
