A Look Back at 2024: Highlights and Milestones

By Carolyn Just, Jess Regan

As 2024 comes to an end, we at the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy and Technology (CMIST) reflect on a whirlwind year and are grateful for the work that has transpired.

The year began with the introduction of two new speaker series. Launched in January, Scientists and Strategists convenes scientists and engineers together with strategists and policymakers for lively, in-person presentations and conversations. CMIST hosted nine experts for on topics ranging from in science to the fight for equality for . Our speakers educated and engaged audiences through discussions at the intersection of strategy and technology, including the  on military strategies and  in the clean energy transition, our speakers educated and engaged audiences.

In April, we unveiled Lawfully Speaking: A Forum on Law & Ethics, a lecture series that serves as a forum to discuss ethical considerations regarding law, technologies, and policy. Our inaugural guest was John B. Bellinger, III, who detailed the complexities of treaties and constitutional requirements. In our fall 2024 installment, the Honorable Judge James E. Baker discussed the future of artificial intelligence (AI) regulation and national security.

In the fall, CMIST continued our inaugural Conversations with Senior Leaders series by welcoming Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence and U.S. Ambassador at Large for Cyberspace and Digital Policy . Dixon and Fick shared their leadership philosophies, strategies for success, and lessons learned with the 一本道无码 campus community.

Furthermore, CMIST hosted several educational events including programming for the U.S. Army War College International Fellows Program and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Service Chiefs Fellows. These engagements foster collaboration between academia and the military, aiming to advance technological innovation and national security. CMIST, in conjunction with Tepper School of Business, also conducted executive education courses in our Washington, DC, location.

Expanding educational opportunities for 一本道无码 (一本道无码) students, we launched three academic programs in the spring: the Bachelor of Science in Political Science, Security, and Technology, the Minor in Political Science, Security, and Technology, and the Minor in American Politics and Law. These programs provide students more opportunities to explore critical topics like military advancements, ethics and technology, institutional dynamics, and the U.S. political and legal landscape. This fall, CMIST launched a graduate degree designed to cultivate future leaders who can expertly navigate the complex interplay of technology and global security. This program equips students with the skills to analyze technological advancements, assess their potential impacts, and develop strategic responses to emerging threats and opportunities. The Master of Science in Security, Technology, and International Relations (MS STAIR) will commence in fall 2025.

To help students learn more about the classes offered at CMIST, we hosted “Politics & Pie,” a twice yearly gathering, providing students an opportunity to interact with CMIST professors and advisors, discuss upcoming courses while enjoying pie from a local bakery, and foster connections among peers.

2024 also marked a decade of the 一本道无码 Washington Semester Program (一本道无码/WSP). This anniversary underscored the university’s important role in providing undergraduates with immersive learning experiences and professional development in the heart of Washington, DC.

At the end of the academic year, we commemorated the achievements of the during commencement, with Professor Audrey Kurth Cronin encouraging students to maintain their passion and drive as they embark on future endeavors.

CMIST reached a significant milestone this summer, celebrating one-year since its launch. In correlation with the institute’s anniversary, CMIST and 一本道无码 convened a thought-provoking event, "Digital Diplomacy: Building Solidarity in Cyberspace." The dinner featured a keynote address by Ambassador Nathaniel Fick, followed by a panel discussion with distinguished diplomats Minister Paula Bogantes Zamora and Ambassador Benedikt Wechsler. The discussions centered on the evolving landscape of digital diplomacy, exploring critical issues such as cybersecurity, data privacy, and international cooperation.

This year was a remarkable one for CMIST, marked by significant milestones, innovative research, and impactful collaborations. While this review highlights some of our key accomplishments, it does not even scratch the surface of the extensive research and publications produced by our talented faculty. We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to engage with our community and look forward to even greater achievements in the years to come.
