Unconventional Groundbreaking
There were no shovels or piles of dirt, but Carnegie Mellon officially broke ground for new undergraduate science labs in Doherty Hall last month. Participating in the groundbreaking with a chemical twist were President Jared L. Cohon (above center and at right emptying the pitcher), Chemistry Department Head Rick McCullough (above left and holding the hose below), Visiting Professor Garry Warnock (above right) and Director of Chemistry Labs and Principal Lecturer Karen Stump (right, middle photo). In the top photo, Warnock pours water containing a pH indicator into a container of dry ice producing an acidic solution and water vapor. In the middle photo, Cohon and Stump pour liquid nitrogen into a hole in the ground filled with water, producing more water vapor. At right, McCullough lets everyone have it with a hose of liquid nitrogen. For more on the new labs, see the story in this issue.
