Bio

I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and I have been teaching in the Creative Writing Program at Carnegie Mellon since 2013. Prior to that, I received an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and an MFA in poetry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

I am the author of a memoir, Juracán, which is forthcoming in English from Pantheon Books and in Spanish from Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial. My stories and novellas have appeared in Ploughshares, Narrative, Playboy, Virginia Quarterly Review, Oxford American, American Short Fiction, Best New American Voices and Best American Nonrequired Reading. I’ve received fellowships from the National Endowment from the Arts, the Whiting Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, the Michener Foundation, and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. I’m also the author of a book of poetry, Cultural Studies, and the co-editor of The New Census: An Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry.
