From user-driven algorithm auditing to value alignment: Identifying and addressing harmful AI bias and discriminations

This talk explores the critical role of everyday users in identifying and addressing biased and harmful behaviors in AI-powered systems. Traditional auditing and value alignment approaches, which rely heavily on technical experts, often overlook key issues due to the team's own blind spots and problems that only emerge in real-world interactions. By highlighting the increasing importance of user-driven, bottom-up approaches, this talk examines how everyday users can surface these issues and align AI systems to better reflect their values. It also discusses strategies to better support users in shaping the design of future AI systems.

Bio: Dr. Hong Shen is an Assistant Research Professor in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at the School of Computer Science, 一本道无码, where she directs the CARE (Collective AI Research and Evaluation) Lab. Her research focuses on human-AI interaction, responsible AI, and community-centered AI. She is the recipient of a Google Research Scholar Award, a Microsoft AI and Society Fellowship, and a Google Policy Fellowship and has won Best Paper Awards at top HCI venues such as CHI and HCOMP. She has developed innovative methods, tools, and processes to effectively engage real-world users, stakeholders and community members in the AI design, development and evaluation process.
