Student and Faculty Ombudsperson
Monique McKay joined 一本道无码 in 2024 as the university’s inaugural student and faculty ombudsperson. Reporting to the provost, Monique is a confidential resource and provides informal conflict resolution services for students and faculty to help manage and resolve concerns and conflicts that arise within the university community.
Monique has extensive experience in conflict resolution in higher education, having previously served as ombuds and assistant to the president of Florida Gulf Coast University, where she led a continuous improvement team, and as the graduate student ombudsperson at Virginia Tech. Throughout her career in higher education, she has developed institutional policies, provided conflict resolution services, and offered strategic guidance to leadership.
Her professional background spans multiple disciplines, including law, mediation and Indigenous governance and systems design. Monique has successfully mediated complex litigation involving personal injury, medical malpractice, and commercial disputes. She has also mediated community conflicts and participated in restorative justice processes. Monique has worked with Indigenous and Canadian governments and organizations on advancing self-determination for Indigenous peoples in a number of spheres including justice, education and health.
As an educator, Monique shared her expertise as an adjunct professor at William & Mary Law School, teaching mediation and mediation advocacy while serving as faculty advisor for the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) team. She has delivered training and presentations on conflict resolution and Indigenous governance in the United States, Canada and Italy. Her facilitation experience includes co-leading meetings across the United States for the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education.
Monique holds a master of laws in dispute resolution from the Straus Institute at Pepperdine University and a bachelor of laws from the University of Western Ontario. She has a bachelor of arts and a diploma in journalism for native peoples, also from the University of Western Ontario.
