New Blog: Learning to Survive

What doesn’t kill you makes you smarter – is the key concept behind our work on Survival Critical Machine Learning (SCML). It uses Live Learning from the Hawk project in the context of a threat laden mission environment. Live Learning takes data collected from the environment during a mission to train new ML models for deployment during that mission. Our recent paper, Beyond Federated Learning: Survival-Critical Machine Learning, introduces a theoretical SCML model centered around autonomous scouts attempting to complete a mission in a hostile environment. The scout has sufficient capacity to train new machine learning models but starts the mission with limited accuracy in detecting the specific threats it will encounter. It has a limited pool of countermeasures to neutralize threats and a constrained connection to a remote human labeler and cloud AI capability. The SCML model balances the tradeoffs between many factors to maximize the scout’s survival time to end-of-mission. We evaluated the SCML model using the Hawk framework and the publicly available DOTA drone surveillance dataset. Our primary question was whether live learning could improve expected mission completion survival over a pre-trained model.

New Blog: Flying on Auto Pilot at the Edge

Small drones – referred to as nano-drones or micro-drones – have become much more common, capable, and less expensive. In the US, the FAA allows licensed UAV pilots to fly drones under 250g over people without advance permission. That regulation has opened the door for applications in urban areas like news reporting, traffic monitoring, construction inspection, recreation, and others. But, today, all these uses require active control by a human pilot. At the Living Edge Lab, we believe that many more applications would be possible if these tiny drones – like their larger brethren – could be made to fly autonomously. This idea was the origin of our SteelEagle project. SteelEagle uses edge computing to supplement the limited computing capabilities of these tiny devices.. Imagine a mission to send a drone to a bridge, fly around it, record the condition of the key bridge components, and compare that condition with previous inspections -- all while avoiding obstacles (like running into the bridge itself!) and dealing with wind, traffic, and other disturbances. This mission is an ideal SteelEagle scenario.

New Paper: The OODA Loop of Cloudlet-based Autonomous Drones

We present a benchmark-driven experimental study of autonomous drone agility relative to edge offload pipeline attributes. This pipeline includes a monocular gimbal-actuated on-drone camera, hardware RTSP video encoding, 4G LTE wireless network transmission, and computer vision processing on a ground-based GPU-equipped cloudlet. Our parameterized and reproducible agility benchmarks stress the OODA (“Observe, Orient, Decide, Act”) loop of the drone on obstacle avoidance and object tracking tasks. We characterize the latency and throughput of components of this OODA loop through software profiling, and identify opportunities for optimization.

New Paper: Beyond Federated Learning: Survival-Critical Machine Learning

Drawing on parallels with biological immunity, this paper introduces a new use case for learning at the edge called survival-critical machine learning (SCML). Unlike federated learning, which assumes supervised learning with pre-labeled data, SCML involves semi-supervised learning in streaming settings where labels may need to be obtained at very low network bandwidth and extreme class imbalance. We show that the recently-developed workflow of Live Learning is a good fit for SCML. Starting from a weak bootstrap model, this workflow seamlessly pipelines semi-supervised learning, active learning, and transfer learning, with asynchronous bandwidth-sensitive data transmission for labeling. As improved models evolve at the edge through periodic re-training, the threat detection ability of the SCML system improves. This, in turn, improves the survivability of the host system.

New Paper: Edge-based Live Learning for Robot Survival

We introduce survival-critical machine learning (SCML), in which a robot encounters dynamically evolving threats that it recognizes via machine learning (ML), and then neutralizes. We model survivability in SCML, and show the value of the recently developed approach of Live Learning. This edge-based ML technique embodies an iterative human-in-the-loop workflow that concurrently enlarges the training set, trains the next model in a sequence of “best-so-far” models, and performs inferencing for both threat detection and pseudo-labeling. We present experimental results using datasets from the domains of drone surveillance, planetary exploration, and underwater sensing to quantify the effectiveness of Live Learning as a mechanism for SCML.

Another Paper Receives Test of Time Award!

SIGMOBILE has awarded Dr. Satya's paper with Brian D. Noble, Dushyanth Narayanan, James Eric Tilton, Jason Flinn, and Kevin R. Walker with the "Test of Time Award" for 2024. "Agile Application-aware Adaptation for Mobility," ACM SOSP, 1997. These awards recognize papers that have had a sustained and significant impact in the SIGMOBILE community over at least a decade. The award recognizes that a paper's influence is often not fully apparent at the time of publication, and it can be best judged with the perspective of time. SIGMOBILE states: The Odyssey paper introduced fidelity—the degree to which data presented on a client matches the server's reference copy—as a critical factor for mobile applications. It pioneered the concept of application adaptation for mobile environments, extending operating systems to support this adaptation across a wide range of mobile information access applications. Odyssey's notion of application-aware adaptation has had a profound and lasting impact on the evolution of mobile operating systems.

New Tech Report: Benchmarking Drone Video Stream Latency In SteelEagle

Low latency is critical for edge-enabled autonomous drones to do real-time computer vision tasks like target tracking effectively. We discuss our work on analyzing the latency of the real-time drone video stream using the SteelEagle autonomous drone system. By varying factors such as the cloudlet location, network type, and the video decoding library used, we show that the latency is bottlenecked not by the network but by the decoding of the RTSP video stream generated by the drone.

New Paper: Creating Edge AI from Cloud-based LLMs

Cyber-human and cyber-physical systems have tight end-to-end latency bounds, typically on the order of a few tens of milliseconds. In contrast, cloud-based large-language models (LLMs) have end-to-end latencies that are two to three orders of magnitude larger. This paper shows how to bridge this large gap by using LLMs as offline compilers for creating task-specific code that avoids LLM accesses. We provide three case studies as proofs of concept, and discuss the challenges in generalizing this technique to broader uses.

New Paper: Democratizing Drone Autonomy via Edge Computing

Fully autonomous flight by low-cost, lightweight commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) drones could transform many use cases involving real-time computer vision. We show how such autonomy can be achieved using edge computing from a flight platform costing less than $800, and composed of a 320 g COTS drone with a 26 g COTS wearable device as payload. In spite of the extreme austerity of this platform and thermal limits on its LTE transmission, the system is able perform tasks such as detecting and then tracking a target. It is also able to visually navigate around obstacles. Such capabilities are only found on heavier and more expensive drones today.

A wearable cognitive assistant (WCA) is a computer-based application that guides a user through a task with input from wearable devices with the aid of computational resources in nearby locations (cloudlets). Psychological science informs development of WCAs and is encountering new issues for research. We discuss three relevant research areas: response time, action segmentation, and task comprehension. New Tech Report, Blog, and Webinar: The Just-in-Time Cloudlet: A Hotspot for the Edge of Nowhere

Imagine using drones to inspect bridges and electric grid towers, mounting a search and rescue operation for a child lost in the woods, hosting a backcountry ski event for a weekend, and providing critical communication and application capabilities for forward military operations -- these are just a few situations where there is a need to deploy a modern compute and communication infrastructure very rapidly in areas with poor network coverage. We believe there are many use cases that could benefit from what we refer to as a “Just-in-Time Cloudlet”. The JIT Cloudlet bundles a mobile access network and edge-native applications into a small form factor. Over the last year, we’ve been closely working with Arm to develop a reference architecture and a JIT Cloudlet prototype based on commercial off-the-shelf technologies, open-source software, and a “Cloud-native at the Edge” design paradigm.

New Paper: Optimizing User Experience in Wearable Cognitive Assistance through Model Specialization (tinyHulk)

Wearable Cognitive Assistance (WCA) is a rapidly evolving application that relies on accurate computer vision models for optimal performance and user experience. However, adapting these models to varying user workstation backgrounds can be challenging, as it often necessitates extensive data collection and model retraining. To address this challenge, we propose an approach that focuses on improving model specialization to enhance the accuracy of model inference. Our method eliminates the need to gather the entire training dataset from each individual end user. This not only reduces labor-intensive work but also minimizes bandwidth requirements for transferring data to remote servers for training. We successfully train specialized models that are tailored to the unique characteristics of each workstation. These specialized models consistently achieve competitive accuracy levels during model inference, comparable to the ground truth models trained with real data collected directly from the workstations, which ultimately enhances the overall user experience with the WCA application.

New Paper: Low-Bandwidth Self-Improving Transmission of Rare Training Data (Hawk)

A severe bandwidth mismatch between incoming sensor data rate and wireless backhaul bandwidth often exists on unmanned probes when collecting new training data for machine learning (ML). To overcome this mismatch, we describe a self-improving ML-based transmission system called Hawk. Starting from a weak model that is trained on just a few examples, it seamlessly pipelines semi-supervised learning, active learning, and transfer learning, with asynchronous bandwidth-sensitive data transmission to a distant human for labeling. When a significant number of true positives (TPs) have been labeled, Hawk trains an improved model to replace the old model. This iterative workflow, called Live Learning, continues until a sufficient number of TPs have been collected. For very rare events on challenging datasets, and bandwidths as low as 12 kbps, a team of 7 probes using Hawk discovers up to 87% of the TPs that could have been discovered via full preview, transmission and labeling of all mission data. Hawk also uses diversity sampling and few-shot learning.

New Blog: A Ladder to the Shoulders of Giants (Olive)

Much of today’s scientific research depends on digital laboratories – computing hardware and software that process the experimental data gathered by researchers. Yet, hardware and software evolve at a rapid pace and reproducing the results from a past experiment done even a couple of years ago is a tenuous proposition. Unless the original processing environment is maintained intact, even the original researchers may not be able to reproduce the exact results. And, the difficulty in creating an identical processing environment may preclude independent researchers from verifying the results of their peers. Our recent paper, Towards Reproducible Execution of Closed-Source Applications from Internet Archives, recounts the history of our ten year effort, known as Project Olive, to address the problem of processing environment archiving in service of reproducibility. It also discusses our recent work in this area which expands the problem of archiving to the problem of archive access – making it easy for a researcher to access and run the processing environment while still protecting the software and data from unauthorized use.

New Blog: Safekeeping Faces at the Edge (Silent Witness)

As so often happens, we can create technology far faster than our social and legal systems can adapt. And, as is so often necessary, we must adapt technology to meet compelling societal needs as they emerge. For the ethical questions raised by face recognition, a more direct intervention to align with emerging norms and policies will likely be required. But, there are legitimate uses for the implicated technologies. Interventions shouldn’t excessively impede these legitimate uses. We started the Silent Witness project at the Living Edge Lab in anticipation of these requirements. We believe that, while norms and policies will vary around the world, four computer vision technology principles will be common.

New Paper: Towards Reproducible Execution of Closed-Source Applications from Internet Archives

Olive enables execution of closed-source applications decades after their creation. With appropriate authentication and authorization, anyone on the Internet can execute any archived application with no more effort than a mouse click. User experience is good, even for an interaction-intensive application. Olive uses virtual machine (VM) technology to encapsulate legacy software, including the operating system and all layers above it. If the legacy hardware is already obsolete at curation time, an emulator for it on more modern hardware can be included within the VM image. This paper is an experience report on the decade-long evolution of this concept.

New Paper: Tactical agility for AI-enabled multi-domain operations

Commanders must remain agile and adaptive in the future Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled multi-domain battlespace, where critical decisions are made at the tactical edge. Over-reliance on static, cloud-centric approaches to Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) compromises such agility and adaptability. These systems must operate in a dynamic threat environment, and learn to detect novel threats during operation. They must be able to perform this learning through the execution of tactical MLOps under austere and degraded conditions, especially limited wireless network bandwidth. In response to these requirements, this paper describes Hawk, a system that leverages edge proximity for rapid and iterative execution of the Observe stage of the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act loop. Central to this architecture is the use of tactical cloudlets. These mini data centers provide cloud-like computing resources without the communication latency to exascale data centers. Hawk enables a human to guide MLOps at low cognitive load, thus enabling an operational objective to be achieved at speed and scale while remaining usable and explainable.

New Paper: Semantic Fast-Forwarding for Video Training Set Construction

We introduce the concept of semantic fast-forwarding of video streams for efficient labeling of training data for activity recognition. We show that this concept can be realized by combining deep learning within individual frames, with spatial and temporal entity-relationship reasoning about detected objects. We describe a prototype that implements this concept, and present preliminary experimental results on its feasibility and value.

New Paper: V-Light: Leveraging Edge Computing For The Design of Mobile Augmented Reality Games

We explore the future of synchronous, multiplayer mobile AR gaming through our game V-Light, which extends current mobile AR game capacities using edge computing. Mobile AR games are currently limited by on-board processing power, while offloading operations to the cloud introduces high latency costs. This is a critical issue for games needing real-time response to player input. V-Light demonstrates how mobile AR games can leverage the power of edge computing, bringing computational resources closer to the user, keeping latency low and bandwidth high. We share our development toolkit, analyze the design and development of V-Light through the lens of an existing model for shared-world mobile AR, and demonstrate that edge computing can provide a “time machine” that lets game designers prototype mobile AR games for devices that do not yet exist.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced most members of the university community to work from their homes and other locations with highly variable last-mile connectivity. Since access to campus was limited, they also became more dependent on Virtual Andrew to perform their academic and administrative work. The change from on-campus LAN-access to off-campus WAN access exposed limitations of VDI as a remote service. These limitations led to a three-way collaboration between VMware, the 一本道无码 Living Edge Lab, and 一本道无码 Computing Service to investigate how Edge Computing could enable a better VDI experience. New Paper: Accelerating Silent Witness Storage

We propose hardware acceleration for a new edge computing abstraction called a Silent Witness. This abstraction embodies a severe asymmetry in the ease of write versus read operations. Surveillance data from one or more video cameras are continuously encrypted and recorded, but the decrypting, processing, or transmission of that data only occurs under stringent privacy controls. For the new search workloads of such a system, decode-enabled storage alleviates the scalability bottleneck imposed by frequent decoding of data. Our experiments show throughput improvements up to 3.5X for typical search workloads of a Silent Witness.

New Blog, Paper, and Talk: Sinfonia

As edge computing emerges, it introduces new complexity. Now, a user’s proximity to edge computing resources matter. And, edge computing economics and market structure mean that the edge computing provider and the resources it provides can be quite variable over time and space. For the edge-native application provider, finding the “right” edge computing node or cloudlet to serve a specific user for a specific session can be non-trivial. Here at the Living Edge Lab, we believe that this complexity calls for a new abstraction at the boundary between edge-native application providers and edge computing infrastructure providers. Our Sinfonia project, led by Jan Harkes in collaboration with Meta and ARM, focuses on the development and evaluation of a framework for this abstraction.

New Tech Report: Sinfonia -- Cross-Tier Orchestration for Edge-Native Applications

The convergence of 5G wireless networks and edge computing enables new edge-native applications that are simultaneously bandwidth-hungry, latency-sensitive, and compute-intensive. Examples include deeply immersive augmented reality, wearable cognitive assistance, privacy-preserving video analytics, edge-triggered serendipity, and autonomous swarms of featherweight drones. Such edge-native applications require network-aware and load-aware orchestration of resources across the cloud (Tier-1), cloudlets (Tier-2), and device (Tier-3). This paper describes the architecture of Sinfonia, an open-source system for such cross-tier orchestration.

New Technical Report: Segmenting Latency in a Private 4G LTE Network

Many edge-native applications require low and predictable end-to-end network latency. In practice, many user-interactive edge applications must deliver less than 50ms round trip times (RTT) from the client device to an edge cloudlet and back to the client device to achieve acceptable user experience. More intensive interactive applications like virtual reality require less than 20ms RTTs. However, commercial 4G LTE networks fail to reliably meet these thresholds. This report summarizes the results of our measurement of the sources of network latency in an operational private outdoor CBRS 4G LTE network to provide a baseline for future network latency optimization.

Unplanned encounters or casual collisions between colleagues have long been recognized as catalysts for creativity and innovation. The absence of such encounters has been a negative side effect of COVID-enforced remote work. However, there have also been positive side effects such as less time lost to commutes, lower carbon footprints, and improved work-life balance. This vision paper explores how serendipity for remote workers can be created by leveraging IoT technologies, edge computing, high-resolution video, network protocols for live interaction, and video/audio denaturing. We reflect on the privacy issues that technology-mediated serendipity raises and sketch a path towards honoring diverse privacy preferences.

New Paper: Towards Open and Cross Domain Edge Emulation

Edge computing brings resources nearer to end users and devices. Edge resources are heterogeneous and dynamic, presenting unique and competing challenges to researchers, network designers, and application developers. To meet these challenges, there is a critical ecosystem need for edge emulation capabilities. Several edge emulators exist however, most do not fully satisfy the needs of edge's various stakeholders. We present AdvantEDGE, an open mobile edge emulator that is feature rich while remaining flexible. AdvantEDGE enables diverse stakeholders to explore their respective disciplines while interacting with each other. In this paper, we summarize existing edge emulators, we present missing requirements and how they are fulfilled by AdvantEDGE and finally, we present research examples that were enabled via the use of the AdvantEDGE.

New Technical Report: Improving Edge Elasticity via Decode Offload

Visual analytics on recently-captured data from video cameras has emerged as an important class of workloads in edge computing. These workloads make intense processing demands on cloudlets, whose elasticity is limited by their smaller physical and electrical footprint relative to exascale cloud data centers. In this paper, we show how cloudlet elasticity can be improved by offloading visual data decoding. We define a new data access API that embodies decode offload, thereby avoiding application-level decoding of visual data. Using thermal, power density and data copying considerations, we identify cloudlet storage as the optimal location for placement of the decode function. Using a proof-of-concept implementation, we show that this approach can lower cloudlet CPU utilization by up to 50–80%, and deliver up to 3.5x improvement in the elapsed time of a typical visual analytics pipeline.

JMA Wireless, AWS complete private CBRS network for Carnegie Mellon lab

JMA Wireless, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Crown Castle have completed a private LTE network deployment for 一本道无码 using Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum. Called edge computing, this paradigm—where data is processed locally before being uploaded to the cloud for further analysis—was first conceptualized by a group of mobile computing researchers, including Dr. Mahadev Satyanarayanan, (Satya), Carnegie Group University Professor of Computer Science, back in 2009. However, it’s only now, thanks to advancements in edge computing devices, that real progress can be made in creating edge-native apps with commercial potential. A., Wang, J., Iyengar, R., Xiao, Y., Pillai, P., Klatzky, R., & Satyanarayanan, M Published: May 18, 2021 Wearable Cognitive Assistance (WCA) amplifies human cognition in real time through a wearable device and low-latency wireless access to edge computing infrastructure. It is inspired by, and broadens, the metaphor of GPS navigation tools that provide real-time step-by-step guidance, with prompt error detection and correction. WCA applications are likely to be transformative in education, health care,  industrial troubleshooting, manufacturing, assisted driving, and sports training. Today, WCA application development is difficult and slow, requiring skills in areas such as machine learning and computer vision that are not widespread among software developers. This paper describes Ajalon, an authoring toolchain for WCA applications that reduces the skill and effort needed at each step of the development pipeline. Our evaluation shows that Ajalon significantly reduces the effort needed to create new WCA applications.

The Living Edge Lab Private LTE network
