University 23rd in U.S. News' Rating
Carnegie Mellon's overall undergraduate program tied for 23rd with Georgetown University in U.S. News &World Report magazine's annual survey of "America's Best Colleges" (Sept. 10). Carnegie Mellon's undergraduate business (7th) and engineering (7th) programs retained their top 10 rating.
Princeton University was this year's top-rated university. Harvard University and Yale University tied for second place, followed by the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The overall ratings were determined by several measures including academic reputation, student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving rate. Business and engineering programs were rated on academic reputation.
Carnegie Mellon's business program tied for seventh with the University of Virginia. In the reputational surveys of specialty areas, the business program tied for first in E-commerce with MIT, was second in management information systems, production/operations management and quantitative analysis methods and fourth in management.
In specialty engineering areas, Carnegie Mellon ranked third in computer engineering ahead of Stanford University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
