Campus community members gain access to buildings (where permitted) and may unlock doors by swiping/tapping their ID card on the building card reader. Buildings are locked on weekends and between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays. Schedules may vary depending upon building tenant needs.

What buildings can I access with my ID Card?

  • Newell-Simon Hall
  • Porter Hall
  • Posner Hall
  • Wean Hall

If you deplete your $40 quota, you can pay for additional print jobs using your Plaid Cash account. See the Plaid Cash section of our website for details about how to make a deposit into your Plaid Cash account.

My ID Card will not tap/was not accepted on PRT transportaion. What do I do?
Please view the ID Cards & PRT Transportation Issues FAQs for more information about what to do if your ID Card does not tap or is not accepted.

Carnegie Mellon students, faculty and staff members who have a current Carnegie Mellon ID Card and are eligible for the PRT benefit, should receive a green light when tapping their ID Card on the fare box reader (located on all PRT busses, the T and incline) and be permitted to access transportation.

In some cases, a green light does not appear and cardholders are asked to pay a fare or are not permitted to access transportation – read the following FAQs for more information.

TIP: Be sure to tap your card directly on the fare box reader; in some cases, cards that are tapped while enclosed in wallets or other holders do not tap properly.

A red light displayed on the fare box reader when I tapped my ID Card and I was denied access. What should I do?
If a red light displays on the fare box reader, then you may not have a current ID Card, you may not be eligible for the PRT benefit, or your card may be defective. If you believe that your card is current and you have the PRT benefit, and the operator requests that you pay a fare or does not permit you to ride, then we urge you to visit The HUB as soon as possible to have your ID Card inspected. The HUB staff will:

  • Check to ensure your ID Card is current
  • Check the ID Card system to ensure you are coded for the PRT benefit
  • Inspect your ID Card to make sure it is not defective and that the chip is functional

In order for The HUB staff to troubleshoot the issue, please be prepared to provide the following information: four-digit bus number, route (61A, 71B, 64, etc.), bus direction (inbound or outbound), date and time of day, and message and light color displayed on the fare box reader.

Unfortunately, The HUB is unable to reimburse riders who were required to pay a fare, but our staff will work with you to solve and correct any issues.

A red light displayed on the fare box reader when I tapped my ID card, but I was permitted to ride. Should I still visit The HUB?
Yes. If a red light displays on the fare box reader, then your ID Card may not be current, you may not be eligible for the PRT benefit, or your card may be defective. Please visit The HUB as soon as possible to have your ID Card inspected.

A yellow light displayed on the fare box reader when I tapped my ID card. What does this mean and what should I do?
If a yellow light displays on the fare box reader, PRT operators have been instructed to permit the cardholder to access transportation and manually record the ride. While a yellow light usually indicates that the cardholder is authorized to access PRT, an error may have occurred during the tap and it was not recorded correctly via the fare box reader.

If a yellow light displays on the fare box reader and the PRT operator requires you to pay a fare or does not permit you to ride, we urge you to visit The HUB to have your ID Card inspected.

A red light displayed on the fare box reader when I tapped my ID Card and the operator confiscated my card. What should I do?
Carnegie Mellon ID Cards should never be confiscated by a PRT operator. If your card was confiscated, you should immediately report the incident to The HUB. If possible, please provide the following information: four-digit bus number, route (61A, 71B, 64, etc.), bus direction (inbound or outbound), date and time of day, message and light color displayed on the fare box reader, and a description of the reason why the operator confiscated your card. With the information provided, The HUB staff will be able to assist you by either retrieving your ID Card or replacing your card, if necessary.
