Electives

Electives are a vital part of the interdisciplinary nature of the Environmental and Sustainability Studies program. Many departments offer courses that count as ESS electives. As explained on the program requirements page, most electives must be taken outside of a student's home college. This is meant to expose students to different ways of thinking and new topics that their primary major may not highlight.

Seeking out aid from one of the ESS program advisors ensures students are maximizing opportunities to explore specific topics, especially for those pursuing the additional major where an academic concentration/theme is highly recommended. Our advisors are able to provide suggestions for courses that are personalized to each ESS student. Students can always reach out to advisors to ask if a course can be added to the elective list, provided it is relevant to environment and sustainability.

The full list of electives is quite extensive and evergrowing, so it is important to be able to check it as a student interested in this program. Below are the steps to see the full list.

Go to Stellic and type in Environmental and Sustainability Studies into the search bar.

Click on either the minor or additional major that pops up like in the photo below.

Once a program is selected, the requirements for either the minor or additional major can be viewed, including the shared list of electives offered for both.
