Claire's research is seeking to understand how glacier mass loss projections are impacted by extreme weather events like wildfires and heat waves, which are currently neglected in large-scale simulations. I am developing an energy balance model which can account for the feedbacks associated with these events, such as surface darkening by the deposition of wildfire smoke. To support the model, I'm engaged in fieldwork on Gulkana Glacier, AK where I deploy instruments to measure the weather and take snow samples. I can then use these observations to validate the model, which can then be scaled up to investigate how large-scale simulations are altered by accounting for extreme weather. When I’m not coding or on the glacier, I love to spend my time outdoors, whether I’m paddling, skiing, or just taking a walk through the park.
