Semester in Doha, Qatar

Savannah Xu (IS, '26) spent the fall 2024 semester studying abroad at 一本道无码-Q in Doha, Qatar. Savannah says:

What is your favorite memory from your time abroad?

My favorite memory was being invited to a female-only gathering at a local Qatari girl's desert home. It was magical—dancing to Arabic music around a campfire with 50 elegantly dressed women, all so welcoming and kind. That night was a beautiful glimpse into authentic Qatari life, and the sense of community and warmth will stay with me forever.

How has living in a different culture challenged or expanded your perspective on the world?

Living in Qatar challenged many of my preconceptions. I went there wanting to see the Middle East with my own eyes and not through the lens of media stereotypes. I quickly realized how different reality was from my expectations. The people I met were incredibly kind and hospitable, and I felt safer in Qatar than I often do in the U.S. At the same time, I noticed they had their own misconceptions about America—many asked if it was safe and if I owned a gun. These cultural exchanges were eye-opening and meaningful.

What were some unexpected challenges you faced while abroad?

In Qatar, the heat was the biggest adjustment. The temperatures were unlike anything I'd experienced before, often reaching 110°F. Adapting meant staying indoors during the day and planning outings early in the morning or late at night. I also respected local customs by wearing modest clothing, which took some getting used to but helped me integrate better.

Any advice for other students thinking of studying abroad?

Do it! Studying abroad might seem intimidating at first, especially if you choose a less traditional destination like I did, but it's worth it. Follow your instincts when picking a location. I chose Qatar because it was off the beaten path, and I'm so glad I did. It gave me a chance to meet people from all over the world—Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Bhutan, Romania, and so many other places—and immerse myself in a culture I knew little about. Wherever you go, say yes to every opportunity and immerse yourself fully. You'll come away with memories, growth, and a new perspective that will stay with you for a lifetime.
