At first glance, Nazi Germany and militarist Japan seemed fundamentally incompatible in their outlooks and actions. But they admired each other enough to forge an alliance before World War II. How did some Japanese and Germans become mutual boosters in the 1920s and 1930s? Ricky Law argues in his new book that the worldview "transnational Nazism" united some in Germany and Japan in a shared ideological community. Using mass media sources, Law traces the cultural origins of interwar Japanese-German convergence and highlights the significance of Nazism's durability and flexibility for our world.
