The Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon offers four graduate programs:

Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition

A program that provides students and future professionals with a theoretical grounding in linguistics and cognitive sciences, coupled with broad training in qualitative and quantitative research methodology. The goal of the program is to create independent and insightful researchers capable of using analytical and empirical methods to illuminate and understand the acquisition, use and maintenance of second languages.

M.A. in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition

A one-year, intensive program preparing U.S. and international students for a range of careers in language education and research, with opportunities to specialize in language learning research and teaching in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

M.A. in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition – Advanced Study

A two-year program designed for students interested in pursuing careers in academia or research-based industries. In addition to traditional course-based education in applied linguistics, our Advanced Study program offers opportunities to develop research skills, to engage in mentored language teaching and to learn effective professional communication strategies.

M.A. in Global Communication & Applied Translation

A one and one-half year program that provides students with training in the principles and practices of professional translation, localization and global communication. This program is jointly run by the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics and the Department of English.
