Translations Filmscreening

Maurice Fitzpatrick is the writer & director of a new documentary for the BBC on the story behind Translations by Tony Award winning playwright Brian Friel. In a screening and lecture presentation on this film, he will show how Translations exemplified Friel’s effort to use drama and language to overcome communal conflict that beset the North of Ireland from the 1960s onward.

Maurice Fitzpatrick is a lecturer, film-maker and columnist. He was born in Ireland and graduated from Trinity College Dublin. He holds graduate degrees from Ireland and Japan and he is currently a lecturer at the University of Cologne.  He lived in Tokyo from 2004-2011, where he lectured at Keio University and received the Ministry of Education of Japan Scholarship. In 2010 he released  The Boys of St. Columb’s, an RTÉ/BBC documentary film that he wrote and co-produced. In 2013 he wrote & directed a documentary film for the BBC on Brian Friel’s Translations. He is a columnist with a syndicate of newspapers in North America including Irish American News, Celtic Life and The Celtic Connection.
